Mister Whitmell Tuffdick

I couldn’t help but notice the name Whitmell Tuffdick while I was going through the Bertie County records. These are from estate sales in 1788 and 1789. Tuffdick, as you may recall, was one of the signatories to the Indian Woods land conveyances, and listed as a chief of the Tuscarora Nation in the 1770s. He apparently did not remove to New York following those conveyances, as he is here, in Bertie County, a decade on. Note that he does not appear in the Bertie County census in 1790, nor the 1787 state census.
