Sometimes it really helps to find something like this to know that I am not seeing things. This is the household of Lucinda Russell, located right near Graham Collins, my ancestor, his brother Thomas Collins, their first cousin Elvy Collins, and Julia Haslett Russell, the widow of their cousin Elvy Russell. Based on Lucinda’s age and proximity, I assume she is Julia’s daughter, or at least daughter-in-law. We do not know who the father of her children are at this point, only that one of them, Sarah, is listed as mulatto, while the other household members are considered white. This is the third individual in this family where the race is listed as colored on some document.  It is interesting that all of these instances occur right around the time of the Civil War.
